Subtracting Fractions with Borrowing
Just like whole numbers, subtraction of mixed numbers sometimes involves borrowing.
Step 1. Align the whole numbers.
Step 2. Just like whole numbers start the subtraction process on the right and move left. Since we can't subtract 5/8 from 0 we need to borrow. Borrow 1 from the 5 and write it so that the fractions have the same denominator. *Reminder that any fraction with the same numerator and denominator is equal to 1. |

Step 3. Subtract the fraction part then the whole number part. Simplify the fraction if needed. |
