Application
Most math problems that you will encounter in the workplace do not come written with the appropriate operator (+. -, ÷, or x) in place. As an employee you will need to decode the real life problem into an algorithm. Words used that typically indicate subtraction are:
DIFFERENCE
DECREASE
MINUS
LESS THAN
LOSS
FEWER
Example 1:
A 2 3/4 inch piece is cut from a 6 5/8 inch board. How much of the board is left?
Strategy: To find the length remaining subtract the length of the piece cut from the total length of the board.

Example 2
A metal platform in a bridge is 280 1/2 feet during the summer. On a cold winter day the metal paltform shrinks to 280 3/8 feet. How much did the bridge shrink due to the cold weather?
