Convert Decimals to Fractions
To convert a decimal to a fraction, remove the decimal point and place the decimal part over a denominator equal to the place value of the last digit in the decimal.
Example Write 0.47 as a fraction. Place 47 in the numerator and make the denominator equal to the place value of the last digit. 7 is in the hundredth place. Simplify if possible. Since 47 is a prime number the fraction is in simplest form. Example Write 0.125 as a fraction. Place 125 in the numerator and make the denominator equation to the place value of the last digit. 5 is in the thousandths place. Another way to determine the denominator is to count the number of places behind the decimal place then add the same number of zeros to the denominator. Since 0.125 has three places following the decimal, the denominator will have 3 zeros. A simple method to simplify the fraction is to use 25, this will reduce the fraction quickly and 25 is easy to work with. Keep simplifying the fraction to it's simplest terms. |
