Standard units of measurement have been established to simplify trade and commerce. The unit of length, or distance, called the yard, was originally defined as the length of a specified bronze bar located in London.

To measure length we are going to use a standard ruler or measuring tape. The standard measuring tape is divided into feet. Each foot is further divided into 12 equal parts (inches). The inch on the standard ruler or measuring tape is divided into 16 equal sections.
Looking at a ruler, the large numbers on the ruler indicate inches. Instead of counting each sixteenth between full inches the ruler has markings we can use as shortcuts.
